Scholarly Editing & Coaching

Scholarly writers need scholarly editors. Whether you are turning your dissertation into a first book, preparing an article for revise-and-resubmit, or crafting a chapter for an edited volume, having an expert by your side can make all the difference. I specialize in working with writers from across the humanities and social sciences to strengthen organization, clarify arguments, fine-tune prose, and generally ensure that their writing is ready to pass peer review with flying colors. I work on:

  • book manuscripts

  • journal articles and book chapters

  • dissertations

  • prospectuses

  • scholarly job applications

For some scholarly writers, I work with a manuscript from its earliest stages, helping resolve large-scale structural and organizational dilemmas and providing coaching and support for the writing process itself.

For other scholarly writers, I’m the final stop before submission, and I focus on polishing prose, tidying up citations, and ensuring that house styles are followed to a T.

Editing is a relationship of trust. I approach every manuscript with patience, respect for each writer’s voice, and expertise about the pressures and conventions of scholarly publishing. Working one on one, I have guided dozens of scholarly authors into publication.

Editorial Consultation

Sometimes organizations need an editor. I work with small publishers, editorial service providers, startups, and other organizations to analyze their editorial workflow, create new documentation and procedures, and provide ongoing editorial assistance to freelancers and project managers. As an editorial consultant, I enlist my expertise to improve editorial quality control, respond to new technological demands, onboard and support staff, create and maintain thriving freelance lists, and generally make sure that editorial programs run smoothly and perform beautifully.

Every client is different. Consultation can take the shape of:

  • workflow analysis & document review

  • website content strategy review & revision

  • workplace culture interviews with staff and freelancers

  • creation of style guides, protocols, procedures manuals, vetting tools, & checklists

  • ongoing freelancer recruitment and freelance list management

My consultation clients include the University of California Press, BookComp Inc., Heyday Press, Stochastic Labs, and Know Yourself Inc. References gladly offered.
